FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2015
Swiss see off Tico comeback to progress
11 Jul 2015
Switzerland saw off Costa Rica 4-3 to secure passage to the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup quarter-finals. Goals from Dejan Stankovic, Noel Ott and Stephan Leu put the Swiss in a comfortable position before Costa Rica fought back to level the scores through Jose Mendoza, goalkeeper Vladimir Adanis and Greivin Pacheco. Philipp Borer was the Swiss match-winner, just over a minute from time.
Stankovic got things started for the Swiss with a wonderful free-kick less than three minutes into the game, and Ott made sure Georg Klauser had little to alter as the first period ended with a commanding two-goal lead for La Nati.
Leu stretched the Swiss lead further still in the second period before Mendoza offered a glimmer of hope for Franklin Zuniga's charges. Adanis's goal, the first by a goalkeeper in Espinho, set up a tense final few minutes and Pacheco thought he had sent the match to extra time with his strike less than 90 seconds before the end of the third period. However, Borer broke Tico hearts just nine seconds later to put his side into the knockout phase.
The Swiss victory means Italy also progress to the last eight, and the two European sides will learn their opponents when Group A concludes on Monday with Argentina, Japan, Portugal and Senegal all still potential quarter-finalists in Espinho.
