With a population of 15,000 inhabitants, Vava’U is the second largest island on the archipelago of Tonga and the home to the fastest growing footballing population in the country. The Tonga Football Association (TFA) sought to embolden this surge in popularity through the construction of a Centre-of-Excellence for all football stakeholders on the island. Furthermore, as the distance between Vava’U and the main island of Nuku’alofa is prohibitively large, many of the day-to-day administrative tasks are handled by the regional association on Vava’U.

As such, the construction of office facilities to house the administration within the complex was also a part of the vision of TFA. The first stages of construction work have been completed, including the framework of the administrative offices. Construction on the adjacent changing rooms and washrooms are also underway. Before the construction of the natural turf pitch alongside these facilities starts, the ground is being levelled to allow for a smooth playing surface and drainage to protect against inclement weather.

Thanks to the support of FIFA Forward, the member association’s national teams and all football fans in the surroundings will have access to proper facilities to reach the highest possible level.
