In order to avoid impacting the social, economic and ecological processes related to human equity, diversity, and the functionality of natural systems and environment, FIFA has taken the initiative to support its 211 MAs to build highly innovative and long-lasting sustainable sport infrastructures. To emphasise this necessary direction, a two-day workshop took place at the Home of FIFA in Zurich from 9 to 10 December 2019, gathering high level experts representing many different regions of the world (Africa, Asia, Central America and Europe) who provided insightful presentations, and several FIFA specialists in connection with the different topics.

Representatives of the international sports organisation such as the member associations division, tournament infrastructures, sustainability and diversity, high performance programme, football research and standards, and lastly, procurement, were also attending the workshop to support the participants and share their knowledge on the different modules highlighted. In addition, essential tools that can be used to complete the tender processes and will help the participants to develop their future pilot projects were also shared.

Representing FIFA’s member associations division, Véron Mosengo-Omba highlighted the importance of organising such initiatives: “FIFA took the opportunity to reflect deeply on its responsibility towards the sustainable development of all FIFA Forward-funded infrastructure projects. So far, these working groups have proven to be very fruitful in this regard. ”

Bosco Büeler, co-founder and member of the European & Global Network Ecobiology (ECOHB), highlighted essential key aspects with the attendees: “Incorporating more sustainability into the development of stadiums and in every FIFA Forward infrastructure project is a new challenge. On the other hand, it represents a tremendous opportunity for the organisation to lead by example towards a successful and sustainable future without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Also attending the event, Wayne Forde - president of the Guyana Football Federation - seized the opportunity to show his support and commitment: “I am extremely proud to be part of a global leading organisation that embraces its obligation to adapt to environmental values and sustainable best practices, it clearly stands out to build and improve every existing football infrastructure across OUR planet.”

By developing more sustainable infrastructures worldwide, FIFA through its development programme, is taking the lead to ensure football development leaves a long-lasting impact and legacy for everyone.
