Farah Addo dies

Farah Weheliye Addo passed away on Wednesday 19 November 2008 in Egypt, at the age of 73. He was a former referee and had occupied such posts as the presidency of the Somalian Football Association, of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations and of the Somalian Olympic Committee. He was also a former first vice-president of the African Football Confederation (CAF) and an Honorary Member of the organisation.

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, who is currently in Chile for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2008, addressed his sincerest condolences to African football and to Somalia.

"Mr Addo lent Somali football a forceful voice in African and world football. His commitment to our sport and the Olympic movement made him a key figure in both our organisations."

"Despite the disagreements which opposed us, I am happy that, in my capacity as FIFA President, I could lift the sanction imposed on him, and on a personal level, could pardon the past."

Mr Addo's funeral will be held next week in Mogadiscio.
