Acting Secretary General visits Rwandan memorial site

Acting FIFA Secretary General Markus Kattner visited the Nyamata memorial site in Rwanda on Monday 8 February; a place remembering the 45,000 who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide.

Kattner was welcomed to the site by the Governor or the Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya, who showed the delegation the different sites where the Tutsis has taken refuge before ultimately losing their lives.

Following the visit, Kattner said: “I am deeply touched and speechless after seeing and hearing what happened here in Nyamata and other parts of this country.

“The progress that Rwanda has made after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is an example of how things can be solved. Rwanda has demonstrated that they have passed through a lot thanks to the good efforts of President Paul Kagame and the willingness of Rwandans.

“The football family should also serve as role models and try as much as possible to apply respect and mutual compassion and football can make a contribution to a better mutual understanding.”

The Acting Secretary General was in Rwanda for the recent African Nations Championship which saw Congo DR emerge victorious with a 3-0 win over Mali in the final.
