FIFA President mourns passing of "extraordinary" Gerd Muller

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Gerd Müller – Der Bomber – a man whose goalscoring talents and footballing prowess left an indelible mark not only on German football but the world game and its landmark tournaments. He was, quite simply, one of the greatest strikers the world had ever seen. The consistency of high-performance for Die Nationalmannschaft was extraordinary when you consider his Golden Boot from the FIFA World Cup Finals in 1970 and the winning goal of the Final to earn glory four years later against the Netherlands, the perfect way to sign off on an international career. It was fitting that FIFA awarded him The Order of Merit in 1998. It is with pleasure that we recall his greatest achievements but with great sadness that we acknowledge his passing. Our condolences go to his family and friends, to FC Bayern München and the whole German football family.
