On Thursday 6 November 2008, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter was awarded the Davos Crystal for his outstanding service and achievements in the sporting world. The accolade recognises personalities who have served the Davos region with great distinction in the artistic, cultural or scientific spheres. It is also the highest honour the political authority of Davos can award.

In normal circumstances, the FIFA President would have been presented with the award on 21 November at the eighth International Sports Night, an annual charity event at the Davos Congress Centre, attended by international stars from the sporting world, politicians and sponsors. However, the award has been presented early because Joseph S. Blatter will be away attending the opening of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Chile 2008 two weeks from now.
