Seventeen-year-old Admir Mehmedi is the toast of FC Zurich, the Swiss striker with the Macedonian roots scoring all three of his team's goals in the final of the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup yesterday. Despite his tender years - he was the youngest member of the Zurich squad at the tournament - this powerful forward with an eye for goal confidently fielded questionsfrom FIFA.com following his team's triumph.
FIFA.com: Admir, tell us about the final. It was a bit
crazy, especially for you...
At 2-0 down with less than ten minutes gone, we
knew it would be an uphill struggle. But we wanted to show that
there's a real team spirit about FC Zurich, so we dug our heels
in. I scored two goals in quick succession and everything changed.
Obviously, when I got the third goal it was incredible, my mind
just went blank. Right up until the end, I couldn't quite
believe it.
Is that the first time you've scored three goals in a
match?
I don't think I've ever scored a hat-trick,
except maybe at junior level... But certainly not in a final!
Are you satisfied with your overall performance during the
tournament?
I started really well by scoring a vital goal which
gave us victory against AEK Athens. Some of the matches since then
have been more difficult tactically. I've had to adapt and play
for the team, defend more, make decoy runs. Particularly against
Hamburg, that was a very demanding match for me, and essentially a
tactical game. And then the final was the icing on the cake: three
goals, what more could you wish for?
What's your general impression about this competition?
It's a fantastic tournament and well organised.
It's gone smoothly and the supporters have turned out in large
numbers, it was lovely. Above all, the standard of play was very
high, which is what's required at international level. But the
matches have always been played fairly, despite the high physical
intensity.
What's next for you?
Now I'm off to Turkey to play in the EURO U-17
finals with the Swiss national team. Depending on our results, I
might just have time to play the last match of the championship
with FC Zurich. If not, my season will be over.
