In the latest edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking,
for which only around 20 games have been taken into account,
Argentina are still out in front ahead of Brazil. The Gauchos'
cushion has, however, been reduced to a mere two points. There are
no changes in the rest of the top ten either, with the South
American duo pursued by a pack of eight European teams led by
Italy, Spain and Germany. The only movement in the top 20 sees
Cameroon (16th, up 1) trade places with Mexico (17th, down 1).
No team in the top 50 has climbed or fallen more than two
positions, while there is also precious little movement further
down the ranking. Over the last four weeks, only the Best Mover of
2007, Mozambique (71st, up 7) and Lebanon (140th, up 8) have gained
more than five places. Two victories over the Maldives in the race
to qualify for the 2011 Asian Cup have seen Lebanon become the
second team to make significant progress in the last month. Another
team continuing to rise is Montenegro (150th, up 3), who are once
again in their best-ever position as well as in the top 150 for the
first time.
All six confederations also have the same leading team as
last month, with Argentina (1st), Italy (3rd), Ghana (14th), Mexico
(17th), Japan (37th) and New Zealand (78th) all continuing to hold
that particular honour.
