Paul Scholes heads home his and England’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Scotland at Hampden Park on 13 November 1999 in the first leg of their play-off for a place at UEFA EURO 2000. Kevin Keegan’s charges lost the return leg 1-0 four days later, but went through on aggregate to the continental finals, where, despite beating Germany, they finished behind Portugal and Romania in Group A and, therefore, failed to reach the knockout stage.
