England winger Ray Kennedy and Scotland’s England-born defender Bruce Rioch compete for the ball in a challenge that typifies the intensity of the fixture in a British Home Championship match on 4 June 1977. The visitors won 2-1 in front of over 98,000 at Wembley, thanks to goals from Gordon McQueen and Kenny Dalglish, to lift the trophy. Kennedy and Rioch were accustomed to facing each other in fiery affairs – the respective Liverpool and Everton players had met in three Merseyside derbies already that year.
