David Beckham may have been celebrating earning his century of caps following his appearance for England against France on Wednesday night, but in the days leading up to the game at the Stade de France, over 100 of FIFA.com users posted their thoughts on whether the former Manchester United and Real Madrid man deserved such an honour.

On joining an elite group of just five players on 100 caps, which included Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, Sir Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright, Beckham's said: "I'm very proud to be in such company, just to be mentioned in the same breath as those names is an incredible honour."

And what's more, the vast majority of FIFA.com users who contributed to the debate believed that he fully deserved his latest gong.

"Yes, he does," was the verdict of drbarb from the USA. "He is also the poster boy and idol of millions; and has raised 'soccer consciousness' throughout the world. He is a well-regarded, well-behaved fellow, and on the pitch performs very well, indeed. He is a fine player."

Perhaps unsurprising, the voices from England were among the loudest. "Of course he deserves his 100th cap," opined lincoln1. "He's put a lot of effort in for the country, not to mention scoring the goal that took us to the 2002 World Cup. He isn't in the game for the money because he does a lot of charity work and even set up his own soccer schools to help kids and keep them entertained. He fully deserves his 100th cap and hopefully more in the future."

But perhaps the most telling contribution was from someone north of the border. Scotsman ollie362 stole the show in the plethora of comments with this concise remark: "As a Scotsman, I think that Beckham deserves his 100th cap. He is a great talent, even though it pains me to say that."

Short, but sweet - and living proof that fair play still exists in football!

Barca tipped to overtake Madrid
The midweek question gave fans a bit more food for thought. When asked: 'Which leader will be overtaken?', users were asked to contemplate whether they thought Manchester United, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Lyon could be caught and beaten to the title this season.

Not many thought that Bayern Munich or Lyon could be caught and while a few debated the merits of Chelsea and Roma's quest to leapfrog United and Inter respectively, there was more backing for the leaders and the challengers. However, La Liga is the place where most fans believe that a shock will take place.

Our old friend, Holyparcel from Nigeria, gave a few people reason to ponder when he said: "The leagues are really getting tougher and tougher by the day. Surprises spring up in all these leagues where leaders fall to relegation battling teams. In fact this is the time to distinguish real title contenders from mere bragging teams. To me, I believe Real Madrid has the greatest threat of being upstaged by Barcelona, although both teams have not showed consistency."

This was quickly followed up by ahmad172 from the US, who admitted that he too had cause for concern for his beloved Merengues. "i am a huge fan of real madrid and i never liked barca...but i have to admit that if madrid keep going this way...barca will easily overtake them...madrid only won 3 out of their last 10 games," he wrote.

Time will tell to see if Ahmad's fears are realised, but as the European Leagues enter their final stages, an important league across the Atlantic Ocean is just beginning. And so, our next debate, which opens on Saturday, asks: 'Who will win the MLS?'
