England looked impressive in midfield during their 2-1 win over Switzerland on Wednesday evening and following the game FIFA.com caught up with skipper Steven Gerrard, holding midfielder Gareth Barry and right winger David Bentley.
While Barry protected the defence, Man of the Match Gerrard was given licence to roam forward along with Jermaine Jenas, while Bentley was at the heart of the team's best moves with his accurate passing from wide positions.
These Three Lions, who were among England's best players at Wembley Stadium, were posed three questions each by the world's football website and you can read their responses below.
FIFA.com: Steven, how did it feel for you to lead the team
out tonight?
Steven Gerrard: When the manager named me as his
captain in front of the squad a couple of days ago, it gave me a
real boost. We'll have to wait long-term to find out what his
idea is for the captaincy, but I was proud to lead the side out
tonight.
What did you think about the team's overall standard of
play?
I think we've has got a lot of improving to do.
Personally, there were some positives, in that there were some very
decent performances, but the manager has told us that we still need
to take a lot of steps before we reach the level we all want to
achieve. We're really impressed with the manager and his ideas
and methods, but it is going to take time for us to adapt to his
way of thinking.
The new tactics seemed to work well. How did you find
them?
I think it's important that we don't get carried away
or raise our expectations, it is only early days. The manager asked
the midfielders to support the striker - and I felt that the two
goals came from that. It was a different system for a lot of
players tonight and I think that we need a few games more to judge
properly how effective it is.
FIFA.com: Gareth, it seemed like you and the boys exorcised
a few ghosts tonight.
Gareth Barry: It was great to get a victory.
Hopefully that's put the Croatia game behind us - and hopefully
this is the start of a new era. It's been good to move on.
It's been an interesting week, getting to know the manager and
the manager getting to know us. I think he's learned a lot from
us over the past few days - and we've learned a lot from
him.
How well was Fabio Capello able to communicate with the
players this evening?
During the game Fabio was the one giving the
instructions - and he's making his point extremely well. He
asked me to be a holding midfielder, a slightly different position
to what I've been used to playing in for England, but I enjoyed
it. Hopefully, I can learn from the game tonight and take it on to
the next game against France.
What did you think of the team's overall
performance?
We were disappointed to concede the goal, but as the game
went on, we grew in confidence. Credit to Switzerland, they stopped
us from playing early on, but that's international football -
we were expecting them to come and do that, especially when they
travel away from home. It's important that we can break teams
down.
FIFA.com: David, what are the implications of that
performance?
David Bentley: We've laid the foundations now,
but every player has to grow, to improve - and we have to do the
same as a team. I'm looking forward to seeing us grow together
under the new manager and see where he takes us.
It was your first start for England. Did you feel any
pressure?
It's was a great opportunity for me and I was determined
to take it. There are so many good players in England, you have to
wait until your time comes. I'm improving as a player, I know
that, but hopefully I can get a run in the team.
You share the same initials as David Beckham, you play in
the same position - and now you have inherited his squad number. Do
you see similarities between you?
I admire David Beckham, I grew up watching him and
he's a legend in English football, but I'm myself. I'm
just starting out on my England career, but I know that I'll
have to work as hard as he did to try and get to the level he
achieved. The more international games I have, the more I hope to
make a name for myself.
