Italy legend Dino Zoff told fans of the English national team exactly what they wanted to hear when commenting on Fabio Capello's appointment as England head coach. "With Capello you can start dreaming of winning something again," he said. "He'll give you the best chance you have had for ages, a better chance than Sven-Goran Eriksson did."

Former Chelsea manager and Zoff's compatriot Claudio Ranieri agreed. "I think he can win the World Cup with England and make them into a team feared and respected throughout the world. He is one of the best."

Yet, despite the widespread welcoming of Capello in England, some doubts still remain. France coach Raymond Domenech described the Italian's appointment as being a vote of no confidence in the current crop of homegrown talent England has at its disposal.

"It's a shame to go looking for a Swede or an Italian," he said. "It is as if you are saying to the English coaches: 'You are in England, you are all rubbish and we are going to look elsewhere'." Reading manager Steve Coppell had sympathy with the Frenchman's viewpoint: "I'm sad to be honest," he said. "I'm a proud English manager and I would have loved an Englishman to have been in charge."

Questions have been raised about whether his English is good enough to communicate with the players. Despite acknowledging his nine league championships in 16 seasons, others have questioned whether even a coach like Capello can lead what some consider being an over-rated England team to success?

Yet Capello believes that he has some of the answers - and has identified that the roots of the problems for the Three Lions lie in their mentality..

"Why did England, with the players they have, fail to qualify for EURO 2008?," he said. "How can players with the quality of David Beckham and Michael Owen perform so differently when playing for their country? It is clear the shirt weighs heavy even for these winners.

"In these situations the coach's role is fundamental and he needs to be more psychologist than tactician or technician. The obvious explanation is that there is a mental block. Otherwise, how else can you explain their elimination?"

But our question to you is - do you think Capello is a good appointment for England? Will he experience success, or will he experience the same fate as Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren?
