England captain John Terry was Thursday ruled out of Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia following a scan on his injured left knee.
The Chelsea defender could be back in action for Wednesday's match against Russia in Moscow.
Announcing the setback, England coach Steve McClaren said: "He will remain with the squad and his injury will be assessed on a daily basis with a view to Wednesday's match in Russia."
Already suffering from fractures of his cheekbone and a toe, Terry had been expected to sit out Saturday's match against Estonia in any case as he is carrying a booking and would be running the risk of being suspended for the much tougher assignment in Moscow.
In Terry's absence, Sol Campbell is expected to start the Estonia match alongside Rio Ferdinand, re-establishing what was England's first-choice centreback pairing until Campbell lost his place in the side two years ago.
