Castillo levels Ecuador from the spot
Both sides were made up of largely second-string players as they opted to field home-based players and it was the visitors who took the lead through Michael Quinonez. Argentina responded and goals from Claudio Yacob and Gabriel Hauche put them 2-1 up at the break, only for former Everton midfielder Castillo to level from the spot.
Yacob pounced to equalise in the 32nd minute after Ecuador goalkeeper Marcelo Elizaga failed to hold on to a Jonathan Maidana header. Just three minutes later Hauche was set up by Enzo Perez and beat Elizaga to give Argentina the lead, although the hosts were dealt a blow when Yacob limped off injured.
Argentina lost their lead in the 67th minute as the referee awarded a penalty despite Pablo Mouche appearing to have not committed a foul on Castillo, and the midfielder dusted himself off to level and earn a share of the spoils.
The Copa America gets under way in Argentina in July. The hosts have been drawn in Group A alongside Colombia, Japan and Bolivia, while Ecuador will play against Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela in Group B.
