What is your favourite football memory of 2010?
Thoughts are bound to turn to the year ahead as 2010 draws rapidly to a close, but before everyone starts jotting down resolutions it is time to sit back and take stock of the last 12 months.
For supporters of the Spanish national side, the highlight of the year is not especially difficult to divine. The historic win for Vicente del Bosque’s side at the FIFA World Cup™ was a monumental occasion, but it was also just one of many events that thrilled football lovers across the globe. Each of you will have your own favourite episode from 2010 and, since not all of them captured the headlines, FIFA.com is now asking fans everywhere: What is your favourite football memory of 2010?
The towering accomplishment of the year was also the greatest moment in the history of Spanish football. Andres Iniesta had the honour of hitting the extra-time winner as Spain defeated the Netherlands on 11 July to reign supreme in South Africa, becoming the eighth nation to lift the FIFA World Cup Trophy. Whether you were backing La Roja or not, was this your highlight from 2010?
The first global showcase to be held on African soil was not short of memorable performances, so perhaps Germany’s 4-1 defeat of England or their 4-0 win against Argentina were more to your liking. Or did the talent and goals that brought Uruguay’s Diego Forlan the adidas Golden Ball stand out for you instead? Alternatively, were you caught up by Ghana’s stirring run, which brought them to the verge of the semi-finals? Away from the action, meanwhile, who could have failed to be moved by Nelson Mandela’s unforgettable presence at the Final in Soccer City?
Fans of the club game have likewise been served up their fair share of entertainment over the calendar year, with plaudits surely due to Inter Milan for a fabulous quintuple that reached its apex with their UEFA Champions League triumph in May. Did that turn your head or are you more loyal to the cause of another Inter, Internacional of Porto Alegre, who celebrated glory by clinching the Copa Libertadores?
Egypt’s third consecutive CAF African Cup of Nations crown was another high point of the year, and the same can be said for TP Mazembe Englebert’s second CAF Champions League success, not to mention their run to the FIFA Club World Cup final. Seongnam Ilhwa deserve a mention too for claiming the AFC Champions League title, after no fewer than four clubs from Korea Republic reached the quarter-finals.
Lastly, who could forget the fairytale season enjoyed by Hekari United? The modest outfit from Papua New Guinea were only founded seven years ago, but they stormed to victory in the OFC Champions League this year to stamp their ticket to the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
Everyone’s memories are unique, of course, so what was the standout moment of the year for you? Was it your team winning their respective league, or did they secure promotion or taste cup success? Was it a big-name signing that inspired you more than anything? Or did an individual goal set your pulse racing?
