Markevich named new Ukraine coach
The Ukrainian Football Federation on Monday appointed experienced coach Miron Markevich as the new manager of the national team, the federation's press service reported.
Markevich, who celebrated his 59th birthday on Monday, has coached a number of Ukrainian league clubs along with Russian Premiership side Makhachkala and was most recently employed by Metalist Kharkiv. He led Karpaty Lviv to third place in the Ukrainian championship in 1998.
Markevich succeeds Alexei Mikhailichenko, who resigned after Ukraine failed to gain a place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ finals following a loss to Greece in the play-offs. Yury Kalitvintsev was named as Markevich's assistant.
