Cardiff teenager Adam Matthews could make a shock debut for the Wales senior team on Saturday 14 November on his home ground in the friendly against Scotland.
The 17-year-old, who has become a fixture in Cardiff's promotion-chasing side this season, was called up on Monday 9 November to join manager John Toshack's injury-ravaged squad.
The Swansea-born right-back has played nine times for Wales Under-17s and twice for the U-19s but not yet for the U-21s. His rapid rise at the English Championship's third-placed club - having been rejected by his home-town club when he was nine - has caught Wales a little by surprise.
Matthews has previously been named in U-21 squads where he was ruled out by injury and he has been monitored by Toshack's U-21 chief Brian Flynn. He made his debut for Cardiff as a 15-year-old two years ago in a friendly at Haverfordwest County and a senior debut as a substitute last season against Charlton.
But this term his progress has been stunning, with 14 appearances so far and even a 50-yard free-kick goal against Watford. Wales play their first international at Cardiff's impressive new stadium, just across the road from where their famous old home at Ninian Park is being re-developed for housing.
Matthews said: "Playing in a team (at Cardiff) doing well rather than struggling has helped me, but I didn't expect to play as well as I have. Now I have to work on keeping that standard going.
"The gaffer (Cardiff boss Dave Jones) chats to me on a regular basis about how I am doing. If I do something wrong, somebody will tell me. Everybody supports the young players."
Matthews can also play in midfield, adding: "I don't mind which position I play in, but I have been a right-back most of the time and that is probably where I enjoy playing most at this stage."
Matthews is the latest in an impressive list of Cardiff youth products that include Aaron Ramsey, Joe Ledley and Chris Gunter, who are all likely to figure in Toshack's side on Saturday.
Toshack turned to Matthews when Aston Villa's James Collins withdrew with a groin injury, his club boss Martin O'Neill asking the Wales chief if the centre-back could have the international break to recover from the injury, having missed Saturday's Premier League win over Bolton.
Wales skipper Craig Bellamy played the full 90 minutes of Manchester City's 3-3 draw with Burnley, but has also been given permission to rest his persistent groin problem for a fortnight.
Fulham's Simon Davies has withdrawn with a foot problem while West Ham's Jack Collison is also out with a knee injury. There are doubts over Gunter too, who has a virus, but the Nottingham Forest youngster is expected to recover.
Leicester's Andy King has wrist ligament damage rather than a broken arm as first feared, and he could play with a cast as protection and will join up when the squad assemble on Tuesday.
Toshack has recalled striker Robert Earnshaw now Bellamy is out, while Swansea's Joe Allen and St Mirren midfielder Andy Dorman are also called in.
This will be Dorman's first appearance in a Wales squad, the 27-year-old now qualifying for selection following new FIFA regulations that allow a player who has had five years or more schooling in a country to qualify for them.
