Algeria defender Madjid Bougherra has ruled out a January transfer window move to Marseille after establishing himself as a firm fans favourite at Rangers.

French-born Bougherra is reportedly a target for the club that he supported as a boy but he insists he has no plans to leave Rangers, whom he joined in a £2.5 million move from English Championship club Charlton in August.

"I am very comfortable here and I am staying," Bougherra told reporters. "I have my agent and he never calls me until January or the end of a season but I have told him I am very happy with Rangers and want to stay on."

The 26-year-old was bought to replace Carlos Cuellar, the Spanish centre-half who was Rangers' player of last season but left for Aston Villa before the start of this campaign.

The quality of Bougherra's performances have helped to assuage fans' anger over the loss of Cuellar and there is a renewed sense of optimism around Ibrox following a 7-1 defeat of struggling Hamilton on Saturday.

That win, combined with Celtic's defeat by Hibernian on Sunday, has left Rangers trailing their arch rivals by four points at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
