CSKA beat champions to bank second
CSKA Moscow clinched runners-up spot in the Russian Premier League by beating newly-crowned champions Rubin Kazan 4-0 today.
Kazan top the table with 60 points, four ahead of second-placed CSKA with one round remaining. Dinamo Moscow sit third on 51 points, three points clear of fourth-placed Amkar Perm.
CSKA dominated play from the start, but missed a series of chances in the first half. After the interval, however, they put more pressure on their visitors and broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Vagner Love, who leads the league's scoring chart, headed home his 18th goal of the season from a Davidas Semberas cross.
The Brazilian striker scored another two goals, beating the Kazan defence on the counter-attack on both occasions, to complete his hat-trick, while Yury Zhirkov made it 4-0 for CSKA to seal a well-deserved win.
Dinamo Moscow, meanwhile, drew 1-1 at last season's champions Zenit to stay third. After a goalless first half, Dinamo went into the lead in the 53rd minute through Argentinian defender Leandro Fernandez.
Zenit's Turkish forward Fatih Tekke equalised with 11 minutes remaining, firing home from the edge of the box with the help of a ricochet. In the closing stages, Zenit created several more chances but failed to find a winner.
Luch-Energiya Vladivostok and Shinnik Jaroslavl were relegated, and will be replaced by Rostov and Krasnodar next season.
