Aguero and Atletico on the up
After years in the shadows of neighbours Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid are starting to grab some of the headlines, largely thanks to their sensational Argentine Sergio "Kun" Aguero who scored three goals in a fantastic week for himself and Atletico.
Aguero scored twice in a 3-0 rout over PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League and added another in Atletico's 4-0 rout of Recreativo Huelva on Saturday.
The 20-year-old's reputation has been rising for some time now, and many are touting him to challenge Manchester United's Ronaldo, AC Milan's Kaka and Barcelona's Lionel Messi for the title of the best player on the planet.
"I am young and still have a lot to learn," said Aguero. "I just want to do well with Atletico and I hope I can continue to make the fans happy because they support me a lot."
Aguero is not one to blow his own trumpet, allowing his team-mates to do it for him. "I don't have the words to describe him," said Atletico midfielder Maniche. "Aguero could be the best player in the world in two or three years."
Florent Sinama Pongolle, who scored twice against Recreativo playing alongside Aguero, enthused: "Kun showed again that he is one of the best strikers in the world and that is great news for us."
Even Recreativo manager Manolo Zambrano was star-struck by Aguero, who looks razor sharp after starting his season early at the Olympics, where he won gold with Argentina.
"Aguero is a great footballer and I am certain that one day he will be one of the best in the world," declared Recreativo coach Manolo Zambrano. "He is so young and can still improve. ."
After starting his career at Independiente, where he made his debut at the age of 15, Aguero joined Atletico in April 2006 for a reported €20 million. His first season was difficult, as he struggled to adapt to a new country and style of football, but the departure of Fernando Torres to Liverpool last summer handed him more responsibility and he scored 19 league goals in 37 matches last season.
Aguero has taken the headlines for his footballing achievements, but also for his relationship with Giannina Maradona, the daughter of Argentina's 1986 FIFA World Cup™ hero Diego Maradona, and the couple are expecting a baby.
Aguero appears settled in the Spanish capital, but Atletico are well aware of interested parties, and have inserted a reported €60 million buy-out clause in Aguero's contract to deter them.
