Michael Carrick is to miss the start of defending champions Manchester United's UEFA Champions League campaign after being ruled out for four to six weeks with a broken bone in his foot.

That means the England midfielder will miss Wednesday's European opener against Villarreal at Old Trafford, and the Premier League match against domestic rivals Chelsea this Sunday.

Carrick, 27, is also set to be on the sidelines for the Champions League group games against Aalborg and Celtic after sustaining his injury during last weekend's defeat at Liverpool.
