A collective sigh of relief blew from the packed stands at the Parc des Princes when Paris Saint-Germain beat title contenders Bordeaux 1-0. The only goal came from the Paris club's new signing from Le Havre, Guillame Horau, who collected a ball cleverly served by Sylvain Armand to outfox opposition keeper Ulrich Rame and find the net.

Ludovic Giuly, who recently joined PSG from Roma, received an ovation from the home supporters, in recognition of his sterling efforts in midfield, when he left the park five minutes before the final whistle. The result was a massive relief for new PSG chairman Charles Villeneuve as he labours to rebuild the club which narrowly escaped relegation last season.

And also for coach Paul Le Guen. "It's very satisfying and encouraging even if it's not a surprise," he said. "This win will do us good, it's precious before two away games. We've been quick to win at home which is important in our relation with our fans."

Elsewhere, Lille lost 3-1 at home to Le Mans, and Monaco and Nantes played out the only draw of Saturday's Ligue 1 programme, finishing goalless. Caen's Steve Savidan, bought from Valenciennes during the close-season, helped his new club beat his old one 3-1.

The 19-year-old Mahame Trahore grabbed a debut goal in Nice's 2-1 home win over Nancy, a close-range shot demonstrating the potential of the youngster from Mali. Goals from Daniel Congre and Andre Pierre Gignac secured Toulouse a 2-1 reverse of Le Havre.

Saint-Etienne celebrated their maiden home game of the season with a 2-1 win over Sochaux. Blaise Matuidi, 21, opened the scoring for Les Verts and Pascal Feindouno's penalty doubled their lead, before Damien Perquis scored a consolation for the visitors.

Sunday's programme sees seven-times champions Lyon away to Lorient, while Grenoble receive Rennes and Marseille entertain Auxerre.
