Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez believes that ending the Merseyside club's 18-year wait for Premier League title glory would be the greatest accomplishment of his career. The Reds last tasted success in England's top flight in season 1989-90 when manager Kenny Dalglish steered them to their 18th title.

"Winning the title would be the biggest achievement of my career," Benitez told the club's website on Saturday. "It's more difficult than in Spain because teams here spend big money."

Liverpool have maintained an excellent showing in Europe, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2005, but it is the top domestic prize that still eludes them, with third spots in 2005 and 2006, and a fourth-place finish last season.

"We will do our best. The key is not to talk about winning the title but to talk about doing a good job so we can be close, so we can be contenders. If we are close I think that we can win the title," said the Spaniard who brought former club Valencia success in Spain's first division in 2001 - after a 31-year wait.

As the eyes of the world have been fixed on the UEFA EURO 2008 gala, Benitez has been busy scouring for new recruits. "The key is to sign the right players with the right mentality - a winning mentality - competitive players, players who are desperate to come here to win something," he added.
