David Beckham failed to inspire Los Angeles Galaxy to victory against FC Seoul, with his side losing in a penalty shootout. The former England captain played the entire game and played a part in Alan Gordon's goal in the 20th minute, but the teams finished the match at 1-1 after Jung Jo-Gook scored from the spot in the 31st minute.

Seoul won the shootout 2-1 after goalkeeper Kim Ho-Jun denied four Galaxy players following Beckham's successful spot kick. Kim Eun-Jung and Lee Sang-Hup put away their penalties for the home team.

"We're disappointed we lost the game on penalties," Beckham said. "But penalties are like that. We played very well in the first half but we were a little bit tired in the second."

Cheered nearly every time he touched the ball in this exhibition match, Beckham set up Gordon's headed goal with a floating free-kick from near the halfway line. "David played a good game and provided us with a lot of chances," Galaxy coach Ruud Gullit said. "As long as we're creating chances, I am happy."

For FC Seoul, Jung's penalty was followed by a golden chance in the 37th minute, which Serbian forward Dejan Damjanovic spurned.

The home side became more aggressive in the second half. Substitute Lee Sang-Hup had his low shot saved in the 67th minute, before Kim Eun-Jung intercepted a Galaxy pass and unleashed a left-foot strike that forced Cronin into a punching save.

"We faced an experienced team but playing on the home pitch, we had a good match," said FC Seoul's coach Senol Gunes.

The Galaxy's next stops on their Asian tour are Shanghai on 5 March and Hong Kong on 9 March.
