Michael Ballack is eager to make up for lost time when holders Chelsea begin their FA Cup campaign at home to west London rivals Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. The Germany midfielder missed the Blues' 1-0 win over Manchester United in last season's final at Wembley after undergoing ankle surgery in April, and only returned to first-team action a fortnight ago.
But, after scoring from the penalty spot against Fulham in a 2-1
win at Craven Cottage on New Year's Day, Ballack is looking
forward to the challenge of taking on another of Chelsea's
near-neighbours. "The game against QPR is important for us, he
said.
"We play at home so we are favourites and we want to
reach the next round. Of course I was disappointed to miss the
final last year. But I can't change the things that have
happened.
"I got my injury but now I'm looking forward to having a run in the side. I hope we reach the final again and that I can play. I was in the stadium for the final last season and it was a good feeling, especially as it was the first game at Wembley.
"It was a big atmosphere in this unbelievable stadium with so much history and I could feel the importance of the competition. In England the FA Cup is very, very important and maybe it doesn't compare with cup competitions in other countries, so it was new to me," Ballack added.
Frank Lampard's thigh injury has eased Ballack's way
back into the team and Avram Grant is a big fan of the Germany
star. "I like intelligent footballers," revealed the
Chelsea boss.
"Football has become more tactical and physical. You
need intelligent players because of that. Michael is an intelligent
player and I like him. He is important for us.
"He can't be at his best over three games in such a
short time back after being out for eight months. Ballack is one of
our leaders - all his life he has been a captain, including of the
national team," the Israeli added.
"I want him to play when everyone is fit, not just when
guys are injured. Michael can do many things on the pitch - score
and provide assists. He's a hard worker and this is important
for us."
