Galatasaray and Turkey striker Hakan Sukur has been told that he is surplus to requirements at the Istanbul club. "We're building a new team and there's no place for him in it," club vice-president Adnan Polat told Turkish daily Aksam on Thursday.
"I've told him that at the end of the season he should announce his sporting retirement - which he has no intention of doing - or we'll have to part company."
Sukur, however, insisted: "I've no intention of quitting football. I want to continue playing for two years." And the 36-year-old, nicknamed the Bull of the Bosphorus, said that he hoped to play for another European club.
Sukur has also been overlooked by national coach Fatih Terim for Turkey's last two games, including a UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina which booked their spot to next year's finals in Austria and Switzerland.
The striker has 109 caps for the national side and has scored 51 goals. He also holds the record for the fastest goal in a FIFA World Cup™ finals match, after scoring in the 11th second against Korea Republic in the third-place playoff in 2002, which Turkey won 3-2.
