After a weekend crammed with surprises, the suspense levels have rocketed in Europe's leading leagues. Olympique Lyonnais were the only team at the top to win, in contrast with Spanish headliners Real Madrid, who slumped to their second reverse of the campaign. Elsewhere, the two highly-anticipated summits between title contenders in London and Turin both ended in stalemate, while Bayern Munich's draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt was a case of two points lost for the Bundesliga giants. Premier League: Last-gasp Arsenal deny United
William Gallas was the hero for Arsenal on Saturday after the French international defender scored a late equaliser against defending champions Manchester United. The 2-2 result means Arsene Wenger's men stay on top, for although they share the same points total and goal difference as United, they have found the back of the net more often. The Gunners also enjoy a game in hand over their northern rivals.

Liverpool could only draw 0-0 away to Blackburn, meanwhile, missing yet another chance to get their title bid back on rails. Elsewhere, Chelsea triumphed 2-0 at Wigan to drag themselves up to third in the standings, provisionally at least, as victory for Manchester City at home to Sunderland on Monday night would see them jump back into the top three.

They are also the only unbeaten side in addition to Arsenal and have taken more points away from home (14) than anyone else. Despite those impressive figures, Rafa Benitez's men are toiling in seventh place.

Serie A: Fiorentina up to second
Italian supporters had to wait a whole year for another encounter between Juventus and Internazionale. Fans of both teams love the special atmosphere these matches generate and Sunday's encounter certainly provided intrigue, with Mauro Camoranesi equalising late on for Juve after Julio Ricardo Cruz had struck just before the break for Inter. The result constituted an eleventh match without defeat for the Nerazzurri.

The draw also helped Fiorentina climb into second, as did Roma's 2-2 stalemate away to Empoli. Thanks to their 1-0 success over Lazio in the capital, the challengers from Florence have now put together a 20-game stretch without a loss. Meanwhile, AC Milan endured another frustrating weekend, drawing 0-0 with Torino to cement their mid-table status.

La Liga: Barcelona snapping at Real's heels
Two goals in three minutes created perhaps the biggest sensation in European football this week, as Seydou Keita and Luis Fabiano gave Sevilla a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid. That result proved damaging for Bernd Schuster's charges in more ways than one, given that all their title rivals managed to secure maximum points.

For Barcelona, that meant a straightforward 3-0 success against Real Betis, thanks to Thierry Henry and two-goal Ronaldinho, while Villareal again suggested they could be dangerous outsiders this year with a 4-3 win over Atletico Madrid. Behind them, Ronald Koeman's Valencia moved back into fourth after Fernando Morientes hit the target twice to earn a 2-0 success away to Mallorca.

Ligue 1: Lyon maintain control
Slowly but surely, Lyon are closing in on their seventh consecutive French crown. Propelled towards that goal by young striker Karim Benzema, who has been in awesome form all season, Alain Perrin's side added another three points to their haul by overcoming Valenciennes 2-0 on Saturday, courtesy of efforts from Juninho Pernambucano and Sidney Govou. In the day's other high-profile encounter, Chris Malonga's bullet header gave Nancy a 1-0 success at home to Bordeaux and kept the Lorraine outfit in the hunt. They now appear to be the only team with a realistic chance of catching Lyon, especially as they boast a game in hand.

Further back, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain both collected valuable points, with the principality side recording an unexpected 1-0 win away to Stade Rennais, who had previously been enjoying life in third. As for PSG, they returned from Strasbourg with a 2-1 victory, proving once again that their away form is a source of encouragement. Nothing is going right for Marseille though. Eric Gerets' troops fell even deeper into the relegation mire following a goalless draw at home to Lorient.

Bundesliga: Bayern tread water
A week after drawing 0-0 in Dortmund, Bayern Munich played out the same scoreline at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Despite 38 attempts on target and 16 corners, Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose and the rest of Bayern's normally fearsome attacking talent failed to find a way past Frankfurt goalkeeper Oka Nikolov.

Bayern's frustration was excellent news for Hamburg, who have amassed more points than any other side in 2007. They jumped to within two points of the leaders by consigning Hertha Berlin to a 2-1 reverse, while Werder Bremen stayed third after a tricky 1-0 win over Hansa Rostock. The surprise of the week came in Cottbus, however, where basement-outfit Energie somehow managed to overcome Schalke 1-0. The visitors from Gelsenkirchen have now taken just two points from the last 12 on offer and find themselves in seventh spot, despite all their ambition before the campaign began.

Elsewhere
The Edinburgh derby ended 1-1 between Hibernian and Hearts, but there was joy for Fenerbahce in the Istanbul equivalent as Zico's men recorded an important 2-1 victory over Besiktas. In the Czech Republic, Slavia Prague consolidated their lead by defeating FK Teplice, a result which made it possible for last season's double-winners Sparta Prague to lift themselves into second.

Lastly, this weekend's headline encounter between Partizan Belgrade and Vojvodina Novi Sad in Serbia produced a thrilling 3-3 stalemate. Having trailed 2-0 and 3-2, the side from Vojvodina dug deep and found sufficient reserves of character to draw level at the end, courtesy in large part to young midfielder and hat-trick hero, Gojko Kacar.
