British architect Norman Foster on Saturday unveiled his proposal to remodel Barcelona's famed Camp Nou stadium inspired on the colourful works by the late Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi.
The remodelled venue, which is expected to be completed in four years, will feature exterior tiles in the colours of the club - blue and purple - as well as red and yellow, he said during a presentation timed to coincide with the stadium's 50th anniversary.
A roof over the stadium, supported by a cable net system, will carry an extension of the stadium's external mosaic over the seating bowl.
"It is an extraordinary idea," said Barcelona president Joan Laporta, adding he was sure the remodelled stadium will become an "international architectural reference point".
The revamped stadium will feature more bathrooms, escalators to the higher levels, new changing areas for the players and new dedicated VIP areas on both sides of the venue.
Matches will continue to be played at the stadium while the remodeling work goes on.
Among Foster's most famous architectural works are England's remodeled Wembley stadium, the Millennium Bridge in London, the Millau viaduct in France and Beijing airport's international terminal.
