No new deal for Montpellier's Girard
Montpellier coach Rene Girard will not be offered a new contract at the end of the season, club president Louis Nicollin has said.
Girard guided the club to their first ever Ligue 1 crown last season, but they have looked a shadow of that side this season, 10 points off the pace down in sixth place and also suffering an early exit from the UEFA Champions League.
They enjoyed a 2-0 win over Rennes yesterday to improve their standing in a congested fight for Europe, but that has not been enough to save him. The outspoken Nicollin told L'Equipe he had been planning to offer Girard another season, but has now changed his mind.
"Overall I am happy with the work he has done and I thought at one point that we would give him a one year contract extension," he said. "But no-one dictates to me what to do. It's me that pays the money and it's me that decides. So we will end it there."
Nicollin added that he has no successor in mind at this stage.
