Groningen appoint Maaskant as coach
FC Groningen have appointed Robert Maaskant as their new coach on a one-year deal.
The 43-year-old replaces Pieter Huistra, who was sacked earlier this month after the Euroborg club finished a lowly 14th in the Eredivisie.
Maaskant brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously trained RBC Roosendaal, Willem II and NAC Breda. He also had a spell in charge of Wisla Krakow, leading them to the Polish league title in the 2010/11 season.
Groningen's technical director, Henk Veldmate, believes Maaskant can help revive the club's fortunes. "After the departure of Pieter Huistra, we had a clear preference for a candidate from outside of the club," he told the club's website.
"We believe our current situation calls for a sporting breath of fresh air and we think, as a coach and a person, Robert Maaskant is the right man to bring us that. He has extensive experience at the highest level and that may be of value for our squad."
Maaskant will join up with his new employers on 24 June.
