Montella pays tribute to Totti
Catania coach Vincenzo Montella saluted Roma captain Francesco Totti after his two strikes earned the Giallorossi a point in the teams' penultimate game of the season.
The Romans had sought a win to improve their chances of playing in the Europa League next season but had to settle for a 2-2 draw as Totti hit the back of the net twice on his 500th appearance for the team.
Montella, who played alongside Totti at Roma and coached him at the club last season, said: "I give my compliments to Totti for reaching this landmark and for playing a great game."
Roma coach Luis Enrique had kind words for Montella, who was not given the opportunity to remain in charge of the Giallorossi last summer by the club owners. He instead went to Sicily and has earned high marks at the helm of Catania, a club that is in the top half of the Serie A table under his guidance.
"Catania deserved the draw and I compliment Montella and Catania, that have done an excellent job this season," Luis Enrique said. "As for us, our chances of playing in Europe have diminished and it's a pity."
Roma have not been in good form at the crucial stage of the season. Last night's result extended their winless run to five games and left them three points behind Lazio, who play at Atalanta today.
Enrique is frustrated by the team's inability to secure European football and he says everyone must share in the blame.
"We can improve in everything, from the coach to the players," he said. "A team that doesn't think of improving is dead."
As for his plans after the season, the Spaniard said: "The end of the season is the right time to evaluate the situation. I haven't decided my future. It's not an easy decision. I want to be fair with myself, the team, the club and the fans.
"I feel responsible and I want to talk to the club to understand what needs to be done, but I will do that when the time comes. Right now our focus is on our final game."
Roma end the campaign at Cesena while Catania host Udinese next.
