Toulouse see off misfiring Sochaux
Sochaux slumped to yet another defeat as their Ligue 1 survival hopes suffered a further blow at Toulouse. The basement boys went behind to Aymen Abdennour's goal in the ninth minute and their fate was sealed when Emmanuel Riviere added a second ten minutes into the next half.
This was the fourth game in a row in which Sochaux have not scored. They went into the game without a win since early November and their chances of ending that run looked bleak when Abdennour opened the scoring. Paulo Machado's corner was knocked down by Etienne Capoue into the path of Abdennour, who lashed a shot into the net.
The hosts were well on top and Riviere's shot was turned away by goalkeeper Pierrick Cros. The visitors almost levelled in the 27th minute when Abdoul Camara got past Pavle Ninkov down the left and whipped in a dangerous cross which Abdennour diverted towards his own goal. But keeper Ali Ahamada reacted to pull off a fine reflex save and keep his side in the lead.
Riviere thought he had doubled the hosts' lead five minutes before the break, but his header was ruled out for offside. Mathieu Peybernes had a chance to bring Sochaux level five minutes after the break only to mistime his header eight yards out, the ball going off his shoulder.
And Toulouse made their opponents pay with a second goal five minutes later. Cros' poor clearance went straight to Machado, who picked out Riviere on the edge of the area and the forward lofted the ball over the stranded keeper and into the net.
Sochaux were down and out and only a Peybernes clearance off the line from Riviere's header prevented them from falling further behind. Cros then denied Franck Tabanou with his feet and Daniel Braaten, with his first touch since coming on, crashed a far-post effort from Etienne Didot's corner off the bar as Toulouse finished the game in complete control.
