Last-placed Freiburg twice came from behind to claim a 2-2 draw and a point at home to European contenders Werder Bremen.

Claudio Pizarro gave Werder the lead in each half but Freiburg found a way back on both occasions, first through Cedric Makiadi and then Jonathan Schmid in the 70th minute.

Despite the point, Freiburg remain at the bottom of the Bundesliga table, while Werder collected their third straight draw since the winter break to move up to fifth.

Freiburg started better and had a trio of opportunities, the best of which was Michael Lumb's left-footer from outside the area which deflected off the outside of the post after 24 minutes.

Werder took the lead five minutes later, with Pizarro passing left of goal to Zlatko Junuzovic, who crossed back to the Peruvian for a right-foot side-volley which went in off Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.

Freiburg fight back twice
Freiburg equalised in the 32nd minute from a set piece, with Makiadi heading in Lumb's corner from the right side from three yards out.

Werder reclaimed the lead just two minutes after the restart, with Mehmet Ekici playing a through ball left of goal to Pizarro, who poked his shot just inside the far right post for his 15th goal of the season.

The visitors nearly pulled further ahead in the 53rd minute but Markus Rosenberg's blast went off the right post.

Freiburg made Werder pay for not using their chances and equalised with 20 minutes left. Schmid blasted a well-hit shot that visiting keeper Tim Wiese got hands to but could only deflect it off the near right post and in.
