Netzer lauds Heynckes, Neuer signings
FIFA World Cup™ winner Gunter Netzer has praised Bayern Munich on their choice of Jupp Heynckes as coach, labelling the move a "masterstroke". Bayern have reached the midway stage of the season with a three-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga while they are in the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League and the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal.
Netzer, who was part of the Borussia Monchengladbach side which rivalled Bayern for superiority in Germany and Europe in the seventies, says the key to Bayern's success has been appointing Heynckes last summer. "I know Jupp well and he is a great guy and a great coach," Netzer told the Tz newspaper.
"He has a flawless character, a great understanding of football and excellent interpersonal skills - he is the ideal coach. To have found Jupp Heynckes was ideal (for Bayern). It was amazing. He was the right man after (Jurgen) Klinsmann and if they had got him earlier, then they would have won the title (that year). It was a masterstroke."
Heynckes was not the only excellent signing the Bavarian club made last summer, though, according to the 1974 FIFA World Cup winner. "(Manuel) Neuer is one of the best signings ever," he said. "Now Bayern have peace and quiet for the next decade. He is the best goalkeeper in the world."
The additions of Jerome Boateng and Rafinha have also led Netzer to the conclusion that Bayern must keep their chequebook in the drawer this winter - because their squad is already good enough to win everything in 2012. When asked if Bayern should make any more signings this winter, Netzer said: "My God, no! Boateng is a fantastic signing for the centre of the defence, he just needs to adapt to it."
