Eight-man Roma crumble at Viola
Fiorentina cruised to a comfortable win over eight-man Roma in their Serie A clash at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. Roma defender Juan was sent off for a professional foul on Stevan Jovetic in the 15th minute, with the Fiorentina striker scoring from the resulting penalty to give the home side an early lead.
Alessandro Gamberini put La Viola 2-0 up on the stroke of half-time before Fernando Gago picked up his second yellow card in the 76th minute to leave Roma with only nine men for the last 15 minutes. Roma's woes were compounded less than ten minutes later when Bojan Krkic was shown a straight red for handball in the area, with Santiago Silva converting Fiorentina's second penalty of the match to seal their fourth win of the season.
The result lifts La Viola away from the foot of the table while Roma lost ground in their pursuit of the top six. Both sides missed an early chance apiece before drama struck when Juan saw red for a foul on Jovetic in the area. Jovetic composed himself and coolly slotted the resulting penalty past Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
The visitors almost hit back five minutes later when Daniele De Rossi's strike just missed the right post in their only other chance of the half. However, Fiorentina's one-man advantage started to show and they finally converted the pressure in the 44th minute when Gamberini's header from the middle of the area doubled the lead.
The game remained open after the break until the wheels fell off for Roma in the 76th minute, when Gago was shown red for his second bookable offence after a foul on Jovetic to leave the visitors two men down. Things went from bad to worse as a stretched Roma side ended the game with only eight men when Bojan earned a straight red card in the 85th minute for handling the ball in the area.
Silva duly converted the resulting penalty to cap a convincing performance for the home side.
