Lokomotiv beat Graz to progress
Lokomotiv Moscow progressed from the UEFA Europa League's group stages and ended the hopes of Group L rivals Sturm Graz by winning 3-1 in a game where all the goals came inside the last half-hour.
The Austrian side needed a win to maintain hopes of qualification, but goals from Maicon, Dmitri Sychev and Dennis Glushakov meant Florian Kainz's reply meant little to the visitors.
The hosts, who came into the match on the back of successive defeats in Russia's top flight, were deserved winners. They had the first chance, with Vladislav Ignatiev's long-range effort going wide of the target in the third minute.
Graz responded in the eighth minute, with Roman Kienast's right-footed effort from 20 yards bringing a save out of Lokomotiv goalkeeper Anton Amelchenko.
Captain Glushakov shot wide in the 18th minute but goalmouth activity was largely lacking in the first half at Lokomotiv Stadium.
The best chance of the opening period came in the 37th minute, when the home side's Jan Durica saw an ambitious effort from his own half tipped over the crossbar by Graz goalkeeper Silvije Cavlina.
Goals come in second half
Cavlina saved from Alberto Zapater in the 49th minute, before Maicon came on in the 57th minute for Senijad Ibricic. Within five minutes the Brazilian had opened the scoring, heading home Ignatiev's cross to lift the mood in the home ranks.
However, a little more than a minute later it was 1-1, with another substitute on target. Kienast fed Kainz and the midfielder, who came on for Joachim Standfest in the 38th minute, beat Amelchenko with a low shot into the corner from 18 yards.
Lokomotiv, still harbouring hopes of winning the group, pushed forward in search of a winner and their ambition was rewarded in the 71st minute when Milan Dudic fouled Ignatiev and referee Deniz Aytekin pointed to the spot.
Sychev made no mistake with a powerful low penalty and, after Maicon and Glushakov had gone close, the latter rounded off the win in the 89th minute, tapping in from close range after Cavlina had parried Maicon's shot.
