ADO suffer as AZ win again
AZ Alkmaar secured their tenth win of the Eredivisie season, defeating ADO Den Haag 3-0 as they continue to ride high at the top of the standings.
AZ could have been in front within the first minute after Roy Beerens' free-kick flashed into the danger area with no-one able to add the decisive touch, but the home crowd were not kept waiting long for the opening goal.
Beerens switched the play from right to left to find Holman, who controlled the ball before firing an angled shot beyond Gino Coutinho into the ADO goal.
ADO put together a nice move after a quarter of an hour as Wesley Verhoek linked up well with Jens Toornstra, but when the former tried to pick out the latter with a cross Estonian defender Ragnar Klavan cleared the danger.
Coutinho produced a smart stop on the half-hour mark to keep out an Altidore header from a Rasmus Elm corner, and Holman fired just wide from a Beerens cross soon afterwards.
Gabor Horvath wasted a glorious chance to level the scores four minutes before the break when he headed over Tjarron Chery's corner from the right.
The second half began with AZ on top, as Toornstra cleared an Altidore header from another Elm corner off the goal-line in the 47th minute. Three minutes later Elm's free-kick struck the top of the crossbar and the Swede's long throw was then headed over by Etienne Reijnen in the 56th minute.
AZ's second goal arrived in the 64th minute when a mix-up at the back between Horvath and Ahmed Ammi allowed Beerens the chance to shoot. Coutinho parried his shot but there was nothing he could do to keep out Maher's rebound.
Beerens was denied by Coutinho after his well-timed run was picked out by Holman before Maher struck the post in the 72nd minute from a Reijnen cutback.
The third goal came seven minutes from time after USA forward Altidore tucked the ball past Coutinho after a neat one-two with Maher.
