Frei, whose brace at Old Trafford in midweek came within a whisker of earning Basel a famous UEFA Champions League win over Manchester United, scored his team's second and third goals at the St Jakob-Park today after Aleksander Dragovic put them in front 42nd minute.
Basel are six points behind unbeaten leaders Lucerne, who take on third-placed Young Boys tomorrow.
In Saturday's other game, Neuchatel Xamax moved within a point of fifth-placed FC Thun as they ran out 4-0 winners.
