Last-placed Nancy held Rennes to a 1-1 draw in their Ligue 1 encounter at the Route-de-Lorient. Victor Montano had given the home side the lead after 19 minutes, but they were unable to add a second in a one-sided first half.
Nancy continued to stay firmly on the back foot after the interval, but a 78th-minute penalty against the run of the play gave Andre Luiz the chance to secure a point from the spot and he obliged.
Montano's goal came from the first meaningful attack of the match, Yann M'Vila and Jonathan Pitroipa linking up down the left to create the opening. Pitroipa fed Montano with a fine pass and the striker powered home from 18 yards.
Rennes continued to dictate the play after that, Jires Ekoko bearing down on goal in the 36th minute only to shoot over. Ekoko had another strike three minutes later from a free-kick, but this time Guy Ndy was on hand to save.
It was third time unlucky for the forward in first-half injury time when Pitroipa's long ball found him in space only for his finishing touch to once again let him down.
Montano looked certain to make it 2-0 just after the restart, rounding Ndy and stroking the ball towards the open goal only for Jordan Loties to make good ground and make the saving clearance.
Jean Kana Biyik was next to try his luck for Rennes, meeting a free-kick, but steering his header over the bar before Youssouf Hadji drew another save from Ndy.
By now it was almost inevitable that the hosts would pay for their misses and the chance came when Biyik handled Jonathan Brison's shot in the area. Luiz stepped up to finish from the spot and take the unlikeliest of points.
