Eto'o boosts Anzhi, Spartak beat Amkar
Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o extended his goal-scoring streak in the Russian Premier League with a goal in Anzhi Makhachkala's 2-1 home win over Volga Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday.
Eto'o had scored on his debut against Rostov a week ago and his second consecutive strike helped his new club to fourth spot in the table, six points behind leaders CSKA Moscow.
Visitors Volga got off to a flying start by taking a fourth-minute lead through Romanian midfielder Mihaita Plesan, who beat Anzhi goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili with a long-range drive which took a slight deflection on its way into the net.
Anzhi poured forward in attack and kept Volga keeper Vitaly Astakhov on his toes before Eto'o levelled in the 17th minute when he beat the offside trap to latch on to Moroccan team-mate Mbark Boussoufa's cross.
The hosts continued to dominate after the interval and Anzhi were soon celebrating when Volga midfielder Alexander Shulein, in an attempt to clear Roberto Carlos's free-kick in the 60th minute, turned the ball into his own net.
Elsewhere, nine-time champions Spartak Moscow clinched a narrow 1-0 win over Amkar at Perm. Spartak, without the services of Brazilan striker Velliton, who is serving a six-match ban for clashing with and injuring CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeyev, were unconvincing in attack.
In the end they had to rely on a 25-metre free-kick five minutes from time, driven home by Argentinian defender Nicolas Pareja, in order to secure all three points. "It was a tough match on a rain-soaked pitch but we created more chances and, I believe, were deserved winners," Spartak striker Artyom Dzyuba said.
Samara, meanwhile, managed to get off the foot of the table thanks to a 2-0 win over Tomsk. Forward Sergei Kornilenko put Samara into the lead eight minutes into the match, with striker Pavel Yakovlev's goal just before the break was enough to secure the win.
