Heynckes: Bayern can get better
That win lifted the Bavarians to the top of the table for the first time since May 2010 and, although Hannover can still climb above them with victory over Mainz today, it was an ominous step forward for the record German champions.
Yet Heynckes says there is still room for improvement in their game. "For me, this was our best game of the season," he told Sky.
"I had always said that the team would get better game by game and we can play even better when the team gels more. We have got to be more efficient taking our chances."
Mario Gomez scored a hat-trick in the win, despite being a doubt until just before kick-off with a thigh strain he picked up against FC Zurich in midweek.
However, Heynckes was glad the Germany international gritted his teeth and played. "It was a doubt right up until just before the game whether he would play," said Heynckes.
"He told me that he still had muscular problems, but if he always plays like he does today, then he can say that before every game."
Kaiserslautern coach Marco Kurz admitted his side had been overwhelmed by the opposition. "We had no chance today, but that was because of our opponents," he said. "Bayern were in top form today."
