Botafogo through to last 16
Brazilian side Botafogo booked a place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 by beating compatriots Atletico Mineiro 1-0 to seal a 3-1 aggregate triumph on Tuesday.
Argentinian forward German Herrera netted the only goal of the match when he converted a penalty in the second minute of first half injury time. Herrera was fouled by Atletico defender Leonardo Silva before getting up and firing home the spot-kick.
Herrera told O Globo TV: "We've clinched a very important win. The Copa Sudamericana is an important goal for us because it increases prestige. Now it's time to think of Fluminense because we also want to fight for the local league title."
Atletico forward Guilherme, meanwhile, was unable to hide his disappointment, saying: "We have improved comparing to our past games, but it's bad because of the elimination."
In Colombia, hosts Santa Fe eliminated Peru's Universidad Cesar Vallejo with a 2-0 win. Second-half goals from Sergio Galvan-Rey and Oscar Rodas helped Arturo Boyaca's side claim a 3-1 aggregate triumph following a 1-1 first-leg draw in Peru. Galvan-Rey opened the scoring nine minutes after the interval, while Rodas doubled the scores in the 72nd minute.
Santa Fe will now play compatriots Cali in the second round with the winners facing Botafogo in the Round of 16.
