Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer accepted responsibility for the mistake which resulted in a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Borussia Monchengladbach in their opening game of the Bundesliga season.

The summer signing from Schalke raced from his goal as fellow new boy Jerome Boateng left the ball for him, but Igor de Camargo got there first and headed into the empty net from the edge of the area. It was not the start Neuer would have wanted after receiving abuse from a section of Bayern fans during pre-season because of his long association with Schalke.

"I take responsibility for the goal," Neuer said on the club's official website. "It was not an easy situation, a difficult ball, but it was my mistake and it unfortunately led to a defeat. But it was only the first game. We were the best team and should have won, but have lost. There are 33 more games. We have to work on creating clear-cut chances and then also taking them."

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes refused to criticise Neuer too strongly. "The goal came out of nothing, it was a misunderstanding between Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer. You get games like that. We have to stay calm, keep working and win our next game."

De Camargo told the Monchengladbach website: "For my goal there was a breakdown in communication between Manuel Neuer and Jerome Boateng. I went in whole-heartedly and made the most of it."
