Los Angeles Galaxy extended their unbeaten run to 13 games, and increased their lead at the top of the Western Conference, with a 1-0 win over Columbus Crew.

Sean Franklin struck the match winner on 70 minutes after David Beckham's free-kick fortuitously fell to the defender.

The win moved the Galaxy four points clear of the Seattle Sounders, who were at the same time suffering a 7-0 friendly defeat by Beckham's old club Manchester United.

FC Dallas moved level with the Sounders after Brek Shea's 48th-minute goal grabbed them a 1-0 win at Toronto FC.

New York Red Bulls missed the chance to go top of the Eastern Conference after they were upset 4-1 at Colorado Rapids. Sanna Nyassi struck a hat-trick for the hosts, while Wells Thompson added the other before Thierry Henry's consolation. Defeat left the Red Bulls two points behind pacesetters Philadelphia Union.

New England Revolution edged DC United 1-0 thanks to Stephen McCarthy's 73rd-minute goal, while San Jose Earthquakes and Vancouver Whitecaps shared a 2-2 draw.

Chris Wondolowski scored a double for the Earthquakes, but Eric Hassli replied on each occasion for the visiting Whitecaps.
