Hannover have been given a fitness boost ahead of the new season with the news that captain Steve Cherundolo's injury, sustained while on international duty, is not as bad as first feared.

The USA full-back was forced off during his country's 4-2 CONCACAF Gold Cup final defeat against Mexico on Saturday with an ankle injury.

But Hannover coach Mirko Slomka revealed he should be ready to lead out his side come the start of the new Bundesliga campaign.

"The news disturbs our preparation but Stevie will be quickly back to health and well for the new season, he is a very important part of our team," Slomka said.

Cherundolo, 32, has played over 300 games for Hannover and the forthcoming season will be his 13th with the club.
