Utrecht hold firm over key pair
FC Utrecht have turned down a bid from PSV Eindhoven for midfielders Kevin Strootman and Dries Mertens. Utrecht technical director Foeke Booy insists it will take more than the amount offered by PSV - thought to be around €10m - to prize two key players away from his club.
Booy told De Telegraaf: "PSV are very interested in Kevin Strootman and Dries Mertens. We have not agreed to that price. [But] it was not a silly amount, such as FC Twente previously offered.
"PSV are still interested, but we have said that Strootman and Mertens should be seen in isolation and therefore must be negotiated separately. We would also not want an exodus, now Ricky van Wolfswinkel has been transferred to Sporting Lisbon. These guys are crucial for our club and we must continue to play a significant role in the league."
PSV look resigned to missing out on the duo, with sporting director Marcel Brands saying: "Utrecht asks too much for us. They're too expensive."
