FC Basel retained the Swiss Super League title with a comfortable 3-0 win over Lucerne tonight.

Veteran striker Alex Frei gave them the perfect start in the sixth minute as he put the defending champions a goal up, scoring his 27th goal of the season. Xherdan Shaqiri doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time to leave the mid-table visitors floundering.

Nine minutes into the second half Jacques Zoua wrapped up the scoring with the third goal of the night to really spark celebrations as Basel won the title by just a single point.

Runners-up FC Zurich took it down to the wire with a 1-0 win over FC Thun, Alexandre Alphonse scoring early, but had news filtering through of Basel's comfortable lead.

St Gallen were relegated having finished bottom after a 4-2 defeat Young Boys tonight. Henri Bienvenu started and finished the scoring, with all goals coming in the second half.

Bellinzona climbed above St Gallen, but still face a relegation play-off after giving their survival hopes a shot of life with a 2-0 win over Grasshoppers. Frank Feltscher scored in each half for Bellinzona.

Neuchatel Xamax stayed up thanks only to a goalless draw away at Sion, which leaves them in eighth place.
