Defending champions Fluminense suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat by Sao Paulo in their opening game of the Campeonato on Sunday.
Pelentier Dagoberto put Sao Paulo ahead after 33 minutes before Lucas doubled the lead two minutes after half-time.
Last year's runners-up Cruzeiro also got off to a losing start as an own goal by Marquinhos Parana two minutes after the break was enough for Figueirense to claim three points.
Corinthians were third last season and they got their campaign off to a winning start when they came from behind to win 2-1 at Gremio. Douglas put the hosts ahead with a penalty after 58 minutes but the lead lasted just seven minutes when Chicao equalised, also from the spot. Liedson then scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 72nd minute.
A Kleber goal midway through the second half guided Palmeiras to a 1-0 win over Botafogo.
An 87th-minute goal by Nascimento Alessandro saw America MG beat Bahia 2-1. Rodrigo De Souza put Bahia ahead with a 21st-minute penalty but the hosts hit back through Marinho Rodriguinho just after the break before Alessandro's late intervention.
Assis Marcao scored the only goal as Atletico Goianiense won at Coritiba.
